New Year gifts for welders
I found this ad in the on-line Washington Post, May 17, 2024. I feel puzzled.
First, “new year gifts” - are these a thing?
Second, why advertise this on May 17th of any year? It’s not the calendar new year, it’s not the lunar new year, it’s not Rosh Hashanah, which falls sometime in September.
Third, gifts for welders? Wouldn’t a personal gift be more appropriate? This is a bit like getting a can of 40-weight as a gift for someone who works at Grease Monkey.
The image of the welding magnets also has that foolish, too precise conversion from imperial to SI units, “11.3 Kg”, come on, you’ve got to be kidding. Is there a name for doing overly precise conversions like this?
Besides, kilogram is a unit of mass, not force. You most definitely should not confuse mass and weight. A force of 25 pounds equates to 111.2 Newtons. If you’re going to be pedantic and overly precise, you really should go all the way.
All in all, a completely foolish ad, lending itself more to humor, than getting someone to buy magnets for the welders in their life.
