Understanding Star Trek
Here’s the key to understanding the original Star Trek.
It’s Hegelian.
Spock represents the thesis, Bones the antithesis, and Kirk represents synthesis.
Spock and Bones take turns presenting some extreme version of events, or the solution to the current dilemma. Then the other of the pair presents the antithesis of that extreme version. It’s up to Captain Kirk to synthesize both views into a complete solution.
Star Trek TNG is completely different. You can’t use Hegel to understand it.
Oh, yeah: Picard was the best captain.
