Peppernuts Haul 2024
Another big peppernut haul! This is a 6 cup of flour, full recipe.

My son and I baked traditional, buttermilk and baking soda peppernuts in mid-January, 2025, having missed the more traditional pre-Christmas baking period. I’d actually recommend doing this once in a while. It feels like you extend the holidays a week or two into winter.
We made a full 6 cups of flour recipe. This year, we used regular Crisco, not lard or “butter flavored” Crisco. We doubled up the cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom, and nutmeg, from 1/4 teaspoon, to 1/2 teaspoon. As my son said, “We’re not 17th century peasants”. We skipped the ground raisins, nuts and coconut.
For the 2025 holiday baking season, I think we’ll up the black pepper, to 1 1/2 teaspoons.
